Joey Barton has taken on his biggest challenge yet by making the first step into management as head coach at Fleetwood, according to the midfielder's former boss Sam Allardyce.

The 35-year-old, who was most recently at Burnley, has signed a three-year contract from June 2, when his suspension for breaking Football Association betting rules expires.

Barton played for Allardyce at Newcastle from the summer of 2007 to January 2008.

Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has been appointed the next manager at League One side Fleetwood Town, the club have announced.

Barton, 35, most recently played for Burnley, who terminated his contract after he was banned by the Football Association in April 2017 for admitting to betting on football matches.

Joey Barton's 18-month ban for betting on football matches was later reduced to 13 months.

Joey Barton has told the BBC that he believes gambling is "culturally ingrained" in English football and that as many as half of all players would fall foul of betting rules.

The 35-year-old ex-England midfielder is serving a 13-month ban for breaking the Football Association's betting rules after admitting placing bets on 1,260 matches.

Joey Barton will not be allowed to play in a charity match to raise funds for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire disaster in London because of the terms of his ban from football.

The match, which is being organised by Barton's former club QPR, will be held at Loftus Road on Sept. 2 and will feature Alan Shearer, David Seaman, Les Ferdinand, Trevor Sinclair and Paul Merson.

Joey Barton's 18-month betting ban reduced to 13 months

Joey Barton has had his ban reduced to 13 months.

Joey Barton's 18-month ban for breaking Football Association betting rules has been reduced to 13 months, the governing body has announced.

In April, the FA handed Barton the ban and fined the former England midfielder £30,000 after he admitted placing bets on 1,260 football matches.

He was later released by club Burnley, who said his departure was brought about by "obvious reasons" given he will miss the whole of the upcoming season.

The revised ban means Barton will be free to play again...

Joey Barton has criticised the Football Association (FA) for failing to tackle the problem of gambling in football in an interview with the Sunday Times.
