Player Profile

With over 470 appearances to his name for Bayern Munich and another century for Germany, it is no surprise that Bastian Schweinsteiger is considered one of the greatest midfielders in the modern game.

'Schweini' has long been identified as a player of no little skill and ability and first broke into the Bayern first team as a teenager in the 2002-03 season, when he was handed the chance by Ottmar Hitzfeld. The midfielder has since collected seven Bundesliga titles, seven German Cups, two League Cups and the Champions League during a trophy-laden career with the Bavarian side.

He has proven a key player for club and country and it appears likely he will break Lothar Matthaeus' record of 150 appearances for Germany if he steers clear of injury. Schweinsteiger has proved an ever-present member of Die Mannschaft ever since his surprise call-up to Euro 2004. However, it was the 2006 World Cup on home soil when he really shot to prominence, scoring two fantastic long-range goals against Portugal in the third-place playoff victory. At the age of 22, he had already played 41 matches for the German national team, a record for any German player at the time.

Although his place came under threat at Euro 2008 when he was foolishly sent off in a group stage defeat to Croatia, Schweinsteiger provided the perfect response in the quarterfinal, scoring scored one and assisting two in the 3-2 win over Portugal before also netting in the semifinal triumph against Turkey. However, as has been the case throughout his distinguished international career, Germany were to fall short at the final hurdle, with Fernando Torres' strike handing Spain a 1-0 win in the final.

It would prove to be a familiar tale for the Germans as they again crashed out to La Roja in the 2010 World Cup semifinals, where Schweinsteiger made the transformation to central midfield to deputise for the injured Michael Ballack. It was a role in which he flourished, providing energy, leadership and resolve to a youthful German side. He was selected as one of the 10 best players of the tournament and captained Germany in their third-place playoff victory over Uruguay. Schweinsteiger also played every game at Euro 2012 as Germany were again eliminated at the semifinal stage to Italy. Since moving into a central role Schweinsteiger has not looked back and Germany coach Joachim Loew has dubbed him "the brain" of the national team.

The same phrase could be applied to his role at Bayern Munich where he became an influential figure in Jupp Heynckes' 2013 Treble-winning side and equally in Pep Guardiola's 2014 Double-winning team. Having become the ninth player to win a century of international caps for Germany, he was named the 2013 German Player of the Year -- a quite remarkable achievement considering the strength of this German generation.

It has been 24 years since Die Mannschaft last won the World Cup but with experienced leaders such as Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm in the current side, combined with the flair and exuberance of the younger stars, there is a very realistic chance that barren run could soon come to an end.

Strengths: Schweinsteiger largely operates in the centre on but he is versatile enough to provide an option on the wing, either left or right. He possesses a fearsome shot from range as well as a wicked delivery from set-pieces and his boundless energy serves him well.

Weaknesses: He is often perceived to have an arrogant streak and his impetuous nature has got him into trouble in the past.

Career high: As vice-captain, he played a leading role in Bayern Munich's unprecedented Treble in 2013. His neat flick against Frankfurt helped Bayern to seal the Bundesliga title.

Career low: Being shown a red card for pushing Croatia's Jerko Leko in the second game of the group stages at Euro 2008. German chancellor Angela Merkel cautioned him against doing so again.

Style: Dynamic, energetic, direct; a classy midfielder.

Quotes: "I'd rather finish with 90 caps and win the World Cup or the European Championship than end up as the most-capped player without winning any major prize." Bastian Schweinsteiger, September 2009.

Trivia: Schweinsteiger's partner, Sarah Brandner, is one of Germany's most famous WAGS and the model came to the attention of males all over Europe when being pictured in a national shirt, carrying pints of beer during a game at Euro 2008.
