Portland Timbers star Fanendo Adi wants MLS to invest in young talent

Fanendo Adi's path to stardom with the Portland Timbers began in a small village in Nigeria, where he was discovered at 15.

Portland Timbers striker Fanendo Adi says Major League Soccer should stop investing huge sums of money in big-name older stars and concentrate on developing young talent in the league.

Adi, 26, joined the Timbers three years ago from FC Copenhagen and helped them to win the MLS crown in 2015, scoring 55 goals in 117 appearances to become the club's all-time leading goal scorer.

But he has watched on as some MLS clubs have spent heavily on wages to bring in aging internationals like Steven Gerrard,...

Portland's Fanendo Adi to miss Vancouver match due to suspension

Portland Timbers striker Fanendo Adi will miss Saturday's match against the Vancouver Whitecaps after being suspended for one game by Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee, the league announced on Wednesday night.

Fanendo Adi became the Portland Timbers' all-time top goal scorer with his 46th for the club as he scored to close out a 3-1 victory over the winless Philadelphia Union on Saturday night.

Adi scored from a penalty kick in the 88th minute to move past John Bain, who played for the Timbers in the old NASL from 1978-82. It was his fifth goal of the season after starting the year in third place behind Byron Alvarez (2003-06).

Portland Timbers' Fanendo Adi misses absolute sitter vs. Colorado Rapids

The Portland Timbers beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Sunday afternoon -- a result that just about spared the blushes of their striker, Fanendo Adi.

Three minutes after opening the scoring from the spot, Adi was gifted another chance to double Timbers' lead when a foul by Vytautas Andriuskevicius saw the home side awarded another penalty.

Sadly, Adi was unable to repeat the feat after seeing his first attempt repelled by Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard, and his second attempt ... well, put it this...
