Stefan Mauk joins Brisbane Roar on a four-year deal

John Aloisi's Brisbane Roar rebuild has continued with the addition of Stefan Mauk on a four-year deal.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has exited the final year of his contract with Dutch club NEC, having played in the last A-League season on loan with Melbourne City.

The Adelaide product, who represented Australia through the junior levels, had returned to the Netherlands after City's finals exit and was reportedly looking at other options in Europe.

Instead he has linked with his former...

With Daniel De Silva out of their sights, Brisbane Roar have shifted their attention to luring Stefan Mauk back to the A-League.

Mauk returned to Dutch side NEC after Melbourne City's semifinal loss and was believed to be considering his future, including a possible move to England.

But it's understood the Roar have been in behind-the-scenes negotiations to buy the attacking midfielder as coach John Aloisi looks to inject youth into his ageing side.

Tim Cahill exit creates 'opportunity' for Melbourne City youth - Stefan Mauk

Shock at Tim Cahill's departure from Melbourne City has been replaced by hope that the A-League club can march on without the Socceroos legend.

Cahill walked out of the club in the build-up to Sunday's defeat of Central Coast Mariners, with City consigned to ripping up the 38-year-old's contract.

While Cahill had telegraphed the move after helping Australia reach next year's World Cup, City teammate Stefan Mauk said he was staggered to hear the news.

"It was a big shock," he said. "Everybody was...

That push might not include Anthony Caceres, however, who is reportedly hoping to move to the United Arab Emirates.

Mauk, 21, after leaving City in January last year following 47 appearances, has returned on a one-year loan deal from NEC in the Netherlands.

Adelaide United attacking midfielder Stefan Mauk has signed for Dutch football club NEC Nijmegen.

The 20-year-old played 13 A-League matches for the Reds since joining Guillermo Amor's championship-winning side in January, claiming the club's Rising Star award in the process.

That form has earned the former Melbourne City man a move to the Eredivisie, where NEC finished 10th last season.

"My aim was always to try and get over to Europe, ever since I was a little kid," Mauk said in a statement.

Australia to test debutants Jamie Maclaren, Stefan Mauk vs. England

Ange Postecoglou expects the intense pressure of facing a pre-tournament England in their friendly at Sunderland's Stadium of Light later this month will unearth some new Socceroos stars.

Postecoglou has included a whopping 10 players with six caps or less, and among them four debutants, in a depleted 23-man squad for the clash on May 27.

Asian-based players are unavailable for selection as the date falls outside of an international window.
