Man United to sell Smalling and Jones, bring in Varane and Maguire

ESPN FC's Craig Burley takes issue with Paul Pogba's sense of entitlement and lack of production for Manchester United.
After defeat at Newcastle, Alison Bender and Stewart Robson wonder whether Man United players are slowly losing the inner drive to fight for Jose Mourinho.

Clubs are slowly turning their eyes toward the summer window, and Transfer Talk has the updates on all the latest rumours.

United poised for defensive overhaul

It's defensive shake-up time at Manchester United, according to the Mirror, which reports that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones "are set to be offloaded."

Jose Mourinho wants to bring in a new central defender or two, "with Smalling set to make way and fellow England defender Jones also under serious threat."

Both players were criticised after...

Phil Jones has admitted Manchester United "did not show up" at Newcastle and deserved to lose at St James' Park because they were "not good enough."

Matt Ritchie scored the only goal of the game in the second half and while United had chances, they could not find a way past debutant goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Jones told MUTV: "We didn't show up today, we started slowly and they pressed us and the crowd were on their feet.

"We got control midway through the first half and should have scored. We...

Jones recreates Smalling's own goal for Man United at Wembley

Manchester United fans wincing at the sight of Phil Jones' Wembley own goal vs. Tottenham on Wednesday could be forgiven for experiencing a sense of deja vu.

That's because Jones' gaffe, which gave Spurs a 2-0 lead, was eerily similar to one committed by his teammate Chris Smalling in a 2016 FA Cup semifinal against Everton.

Judge for yourself; here's a reminder of what Jones did:

Now compare it to Smalling's unfortunate error:

And it's not just the goals that are so similar; consider that they...

English Premier League: Christian Eriksen (1') Tottenham 1-0 Manchester United

Manchester United were played off the park on Wednesday evening and in the end were flattered by the 2-0 scoreline.

Jose Mourinho's team couldn't have gotten off to a worse start, with Christian Eriksen giving Tottenham the lead with just 11 seconds on the clock. Harry Kane, who won the header in the lead up to the goal, was in United's half at kick-off so the goal shouldn't have stood, but that knowledge doesn't excuse the United defence from being asleep.

It went from bad to worse when Phil...

Jones enjoys fitness, form to establish himself in Man United's defence

ESPN FC's Ale Moreno and Alexis Nunes square off in predicting some of the most notable fixtures during the FA Cup fourth round.
Steve Nicol explains why Manchester United's purchase of Alexis Sanchez could prove to be a conundrum for Jose Mourinho.

In the shadow of the freezing East Lancashire moors last Saturday, one player looked completely at ease, despite being booed by home fans: Phil Jones was one of Manchester United's best performers as his team earned a 1-0 win at Burnley's Turf Moor.

He was jeered because he started his career at nearby Blackburn Rovers. The Burnley-Blackburn rivalry, between clubs from towns approximately 12 miles apart, is one of the most pernicious in English football. Yet it's a curiosity that they seldom meet...

Phil Jones is healthy again and showing he's part of the solution at Man United

ESPN FC's Rob Dawson and Mark Ogden assess what Alexis Sanchez has to offer after sealing his move to Man United.

It's remarkable, the difference that a few weeks and an elite signing can make. The arrival of Alexis Sanchez has probably come too late to affect Manchester United's hopes of winning the Premier League -- they trail Manchester City by 12 points, and by 19 goals in the goal difference column --but it has certainly strengthened their designs on the UEFA Champions League. What's possibly gone a little unnoticed in that time is the form of Phil Jones, which though not attracting much fanfare has been...
