Tottenham's Erik Lamela says Argentina return spurred on recovery from injury

Erik Lamela said he was determined to return to the Argentina squad during his 13-month injury absence and is thrilled to have now achieved that goal.

The 26-year-old Tottenham winger's last international appearance came in September 2016, a month before he suffered a hip problem that sidelined him for over a year.

Lamela was overlooked for the World Cup squad but, having scored six goals for Spurs this season, he has been recalled and could add to his 23 caps when Argentina play back-to-back friendlies...

Argentina call up Erik Lamela for Mexico friendlies; Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero out

Argentina have recalled Tottenham Hotspur forward Erik Lamela for this month's double-header of friendlies against Mexico, the country's football association said on Thursday, while Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi remain out.

Lamela, who has 23 caps, last played for the national side against Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier in 2016 but missed much of last season and the Russia World Cup with a hip injury.

Interim coach Lionel Scaloni also gave a first call-up to Racing's 20-year-old attacking midfielder...

Pep Guardiola: Spurs' Erik Lamela missed chance at goal due to Wembley pitch

LONDON -- Pep Guardiola stopped short of criticising the state of the Wembley pitch but said it contributed to Erik Lamela's late miss in Manchester City's 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Wembley turf, covered in NFL marking following Sunday's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars, was bare and bumpy in large areas contributing to a poor quality game. Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal in the sixth minute but Lamela blasted a late chance over the bar when the ball bobbled...

Erik Lamela on Tottenham injury trouble: Balancing training, matches drives me 'crazy'

English Premier League: Erik Lamela (44') West Ham 0-1 Tottenham

Tottenham's Erik Lamela has said he is having to manage his workload and prioritise matches over training to ensure he remains injury-free, and admits the balancing act sometimes drives him "crazy."

The Argentinian midfielder was sidelined for more than a year between October 2016 and November 2017, undergoing surgery on both of his hips during that period.

He has now scored five goals in seven matches, including Saturday's winner at West Ham. But that was Lamela's first Premier League start...

Erik Lamela rewards Tottenham's patience, shows his worth vs. West Ham

In December 2017, Mauricio Pochettino offered an indication of how highly he rates Erik Lamela.

At points in the 12 months before that, Tottenham fans might have wondered whether they would ever see the Argentine attacker again. His spell out with an initially innocuous-seeming hip injury stretched on and on, public updates on his condition were vague, and (ultimately false) rumours spread that there might be other explanations for his absence.

Eventually in November he returned, and a month later...

Tottenham's Erik Lamela hails fierce competition for places under Mauricio Pochettino

Erik Lamela feels he is making a fresh start at Tottenham and is keen to make up for the time he has lost through injury, but he is aware the competition for places has never been fiercer.

The Argentinian midfielder, who joined Spurs from Roma in 2013, missed the second half of his debut season in North London because of thigh and back injuries, and hip problems then sidelined him for over a year from October 2016 to November 2017.

He made 33 appearances after his return last campaign but struggled...
