Parma president Giampietro Manenti threatens to walk away from club

Parma president Giampietro Manenti has threatened to walk away from the financially-troubled club in view of the treatment he was given by angry fans as he attended a meeting with the city's mayor on Friday.

Manenti was threatened and almost attacked as he walked to the meeting in the city hall. There, he was unable to do anything more than repeat the promises he has been making for the past 10 days -- that the outstanding wages are in the process of being paid.

However, the Italian who has business interests in Slovenia warned over the weekend that he may halt those payments and walk away from the club in view of recent events.

"The attack I was subject to on Friday has made me think," Manenti told RAI2 television. "I'm considering selling the club to a very big company. I thought that Parma was a peaceful, quiet city. Now there are three options: sell up, hand the books to the tribunal or present a rescue plan to the prosecutors.

"If somebody comes forward with an offer, we might take into consideration the idea of selling."

That would not resolve the club's current problems, however, with staff still waiting for outstanding wages to be paid and with now two games to be rearranged due to postponements with the players saying they are not in any fit state to perform.

Should the club be declared bankrupt-- which is looking increasingly likely -- all of their remaining league matches will be forfeited.

"It's a very, very complicated situation and it's one we must consider without letting our emotions take a hold," said the president of the Serie A Maurizio Beretta to RAI radio on Monday, reports ANSA.

"We need to study the situation well and try to take the best decision possible. We have an assembly on Friday and we will discuss and evaluate what initiatives can be considered then."

In the meantime, the players continue to train for next Sunday's clash with Atalanta, should the game be given the green light to be staged with spectators at the Stadio Tardini. Parma's recent match with Udinese was called off due to the inability of the club to pay for stewarding.
