Parma set to appeal FIGC one point deduction for unpaid wages

Parma have announced they are to appeal a decision made by the Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) disciplinary panel to dock them a point for financial irregularities.

The Gialloblu have had one point deducted for "failing to provide proof of payment of taxes relating to the months of November and December by the deadline of Feb. 17, 2014," according to a disciplinary statement published on the FIGC website.

Furthermore, current Parma president Tommaso Ghirardi and general manager Pietro Leonardi have been suspended for two months and fined 5,000 euros each.

The failure to pay the taxes on time was also the reason why Parma were not granted a licence to play in the Europa League this season -- a decision they initially vowed to fight to the end, but which they have since appeared to accept rather than take an appeal any further.

However, the Gialloblu, who currently sit bottom of Serie A, will be appealing Tuesday's ruling.

"Upon examining the motivation given by the disciplinary panel, [Parma FC] are convinced that there is ample margin to obtain a total revision of the sentence and to gain back the deducted point," read an official club statement.

Parma's problems do not end there, though. Last month, the club announced that they had not managed to pay outstanding wages ahead of a league deadline, meaning an almost certain points deduction is to be applied in the New Year.

They are currently subject to a takeover bid from a Russian and Cypriot group which is expected to go through in the coming days. The breakdown in talks with another interested party, believed to be Albanian oil tycoon Rezart Taci, led to the failure to meet the deadline for salary payments last month.

Ghirardi put the club up for sale immediately after UEFA refused his club a licence in May.

After 14 games of the season, and with the first point deduction already applied, Parma are eight points from safety with just five points themselves -- the result of two wins and 12 defeats.
