PSG's Angel Di Maria silent on new contract, eager to move to midfield

PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germain's Angel Di Maria remained coy over reports that he is set to sign a new contract with the club.

Entering the final 12 months of his contract, Di Maria has featured heavily in coach Thomas Tuchel's early matches and appears to be above Julian Draxler in the pecking order.

"The most important thing is the team and thinking about each match," Di Maria said in a news conference on Friday, a day before PSG host Angers. "I have spoken with the club and I am calm.

"My family is happy here, which is very important to me. I have also spoken with the coach and he is happy with me. I work and think about the next game."

Di Maria, 30, said last season was not easy because of the emergence of the front three of Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Neymar, which has been nicknamed "MCN."

He said he was frustrated with Unai Emery's refusal to consider him as a regular member of the starting XI.

"Last season was difficult because of MCN," Di Maria said. "However, whenever I was on the pitch, I tried to show what I could do.

"The then coach only wanted to play with three attackers. I do not know why I did not play so much last season. You will have to ask the coach from that time."

Di Maria also rejected claims that there is tension between Neymar and Mbappe after Mbappe won the World Cup with France and was named the competition's best young player.

"The relationship within MCN is perfect," he said. "There are some things that were invented about Neymar and Kylian.

"However, during the Trophee des Champions, you could see how good the chemistry is."

Tuchel is keen to utilise Di Maria in his midfield, and Di Maria is keen to play there after his success in that position while playing with Real Madrid.

"The new coach plans to play me in this position," Di Maria said. "Each boss chooses, and I do the best that I can. He is a coach who is close to us players and he listens to what we have to say.

"I always wanted to write a page of history with PSG. The coach sees me in midfield and I am ready and willing to play there -- anywhere, in fact."

Regarding his recent omission from the Argentina national team, Di Maria said he has been told that it is an effort to test out fresher blood.

"They want to try new players, so I am being rested," he said. "There will be other matches."
