PSG appeal over UEFA re-opening FFP case upheld by CAS

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that it has upheld Paris Saint-Germain's appeal against UEFA regarding financial fair play (FFP).

PSG filed an appeal to CAS in October 2018 against the Adjudicatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body's (CFCB) decision to reinvestigate the French champions' FFP situation in June and subsequent delay until September, and that appeal has been upheld.

This means that UEFA's original decision back in June is final, so PSG have avoided FFP sanctions for 2015, 2016 and up until the summer of 2017.

The CAS panel decided that the self-imposed 10-day limit set by the CFCB itself dictated that the review had to be taken within that timeframe and the fact that it did not invalidated it.

"The CAS Panel concurred that the 10-day time limit which starts to run from the date of communication of the decision of the Chief Investigator to the CFCB Chairman, as set out in Article 16 (1) of the Applicable Rules, did indeed mean that the review conducted by the Adjudicatory Chamber should have taken place within ten days and that since the Challenged Decision was issued beyond the 10-day time limit," a CAS statement read. "The Challenged Decision was untimely and must be annulled."

PSG responded to the CAS decision calmly, stating their intention to continue their development and stressed that they have always been transparent with UEFA.

"PSG has noted the decision of the CAS in Lausanne in its favour today," a club statement read. "The decision made on June 13, 2018 is confirmed and PSG now intends to calmly pursue its development.

"The club states that it has always followed the rules and striven to respond calmly and transparently to UEFA and ICFC demands."

UEFA issued a statement acknowledging the CAS ruling, adding it will "consider implementing as soon as possible any clarifications or amendments to its rules that may result from the analysis of the abovementioned award."

With the June verdict sticking, PSG remain under scrutiny for their transfer dealings from the summer of 2017, including Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, but have since announced lucrative deals such as the Accor Live Limitless shirt sponsorship -- in Europe's top four of its kind.
