Mbappe on PSG's win over Bayern: 'The story is only just beginning'

Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe has promised that the best is yet to come after helping the French capital outfit to a 3-0 UEFA Champions League Group B win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday, while manager Unai Emery said the win showed his side are on the same level as Europe's elite.

The France international teed up Edinson Cavani to make it 2-0 in the first half and created an opportunist finish for Neymar in the second after terrorising David Alaba and the visiting defence.

"The story is only just beginning," Mbappe told Canal+ after the final whistle at Parc des Princes. "We knew in our hearts that we had to put in a great performance against a great team. We did that.

"Expectations were high, which is normal after a summer transfer window like ours. It was a complete performance and now we move on to the next match on Saturday. We are here to win every game.

"Unhappy to be substituted? Who is happy to be substituted? Part of the coach's job is to know how to give everybody some game time."

PSG captain Thiago Silva hailed the victory over Bayern but does not want for him and his teammates to stop there.

"It was simply a win over a great Bayern side," the Brazil international told Canal+. "We were up against a great coach, who worked with us in the past.

"We knew the difficulties we faced because we worked with Carlo for a long time. We showed great humility and deserved to win, though.

"Are we stronger this year? Each year, we progress a bit. With Kylian and Neymar's arrrivals, we have gone up another notch. The other teams will respect us a little more. Now, we must keep on working."

PSG chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi was delighted with the result but the Qatari supremo lavished particular praise on Mbappe after his display in the French capital.

"We put in a great performance against a great team," Al-Khelaifi told journalists in the mixed zone after the final whistle. "We are satisfied with the result. We did suffer a bit, that is true, but we came through and everybody put in a great performance.

"Mbappe? He really had a great game. He is well known for being a great player, even if he is young. We invested in him because we know that he is a top talent."

Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola kept an impressive clean sheet and may well have ended Kevin Trapp's hopes of usurping him as Emery's first choice.

"It is a big message that we are sending to the whole of Europe," the youth academy graduate told Canal+. "We will take it a game at a time because there is a long way to go but we will continue to look for win after win."

Midfielder Marco Verratti was not at his best but he hailed the team's "complete performance" up against a strong Bayern side.

"We put in a complete performance," the Italy international declared in the mixed zone. "We were up against a great team that plays very well on the ball.

"Our early goal changed our approach, a bit. We waited for Bayern. Everybody defended well and suffered together. It was proof of our great maturity as a team."

Cavani put his penalty spat with Neymar behind him to score the second of PSG's three goals, and the Uruguay international stressed the togetherness of the squad, despite speculation to the contrary.

"We are all different," Cavani told Mediaset Premium after the game. "We might all have different ways of living and seeing things.

"However, when we are on the pitch, we have to all work together as if we are a family working towards the same objective -- for the team to win."

PSG coach Emery felt the win over Bayern shows that the French giants are at the same level as the likes of the Germans and Barcelona, while the Spaniard also praised Mbappe's outing.

"There are the likes of Barca and Bayern," Emery said in his postmatch news conference. "Today, PSG are like them."

"Kylian? He is progressing well and getting better and better. He has a lot of desire and talent, which will help the team develop. That is what we had in mind when we bought him. He is growing here and that helps the team to grow too. He put in a complete performance."
