Unai Emery: League cup win can help PSG battle Monaco for Ligue 1 as well

Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery vowed to challenge Monaco all the way for this year's Ligue 1 title after his team's 4-1 win over the same rivals in the Coupe de la Ligue final.

PSG recovered their composure following last month's Champions League exit at the hands of Barcelona to bag their first silverware of the current campaign with a fourth successive victory in France's league cup final.

First-half goals from Julian Draxler and Angel di Maria, and then two after the break from striker Edinson Cavani, did the trick for Emery's men in Lyon on Saturday night.

Monaco's Thomas Lemar briefly pulled the league leaders back level, before PSG powered to an ultimately impressive win.

"This team is used to battling for titles," said Emery. "This was important for the players, for the supporters, for all of us.

"Before the match, I said it was good we were playing against Monaco, because this year they are very strong -- so it's the best time to play them so we can show we're pretty good as well."

PSG lost 3-1 at Monaco in Ligue 1 this season, managed only a 1-1 draw at home in the return match and trail Leonardo Jardim's team by three points -- as well as a massive 22 on goal difference.

Emery is nonetheless optimistic after such an encouraging performance.

"It was important to show we've made progress, and today we've done that," he added. "It was a great match, but congratulations to Monaco as well -- because they've played very well in this competition.

"I'm just happy to have proved we're a good side and one that wants to keep getting better.

"Now we'll press on with trying to win the league as well. That's our aim."

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim admitted PSG were "too strong" for his side on Saturday.

"Our objective was to win the final, but PSG were superior," Jardim said. "They were much too strong this evening.

"It was the first time in a final for a lot of our players. This was an important experience for them. PSG have a lot of experienced players and are used to playing finals. It had been seven years since we last played one.

"We conceded two goals at crucial moments, one at the end of the first half and another early in the second half.

"But that we lost here does not mean we will not be able to perform in the remainder of the season. Every competition has its place and is different. We have a Coupe de France game against Lille coming up and then turn our focus to Ligue 1 again."
