Unai Emery pleased as PSG seal 'most important' week with win at Lyon

Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery has hailed the past week as his "most important" in the French capital since taking over in the summer.

The Ligue 1 giants followed up Wednesday's 2-2 draw away at Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League, a result that has put PSG in the driving seat to finish top of Group A, with a 2-1 win away at Lyson in Le Championnat to close the gap on Nice and Monaco to one point.

Speaking in his postmatch news conference, Emery said the past seven days were crucial but urged caution by acknowledging that "we are still only third in the league."

"It was normal Lyon, at home, were attacking," the Spaniard added. "We suffered but we deserved to win. We showed character. Lyon had a good second half but we reclaimed control at the end of the game.

"It is good that the standard of the league is high. We have won this evening but the upcoming matches against Angers and Montpellier will also be important."

PSG right-back Serge Aurier was voted man of the match for his energetic display at Parc OL and the Ivory coast international conceded "we were not so convincing at the start of the second half and that allowed them back into it."

"It was a difficult match against a team that wanted a good result," Aurier said. "We knew that it would not be easy but in the end we won.

"We started the game well and showed a lot of composure. We scored, which allowed us to take a bit of a breather. We won this game through character. We are happy because it was important to win this evening."

The French champions' midfielder Blaise Matuidi was played out wide on the left again instead of his usual central midfield berth and the France international admitted it was important to beat Lyon after Nice and Monaco's wins earlier that weekend.

"We knew it would not be easy here but in the end we won," said Matuidi. "Experience also made the difference. It was important to win, because the teams ahead of us are not letting up."

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas' recent attacks on PSG added spice to the build-up to this encounter and PSG chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi was able to issue to perfect riposte to his adversary.

"It has been a good week for us," the Qatari supremo beamed. "This evening, we closed the gap on Monaco and Nice. I was very confident before the match.

"I saw in the eyes of the players a desire to win. The jokes that were made [by Aulas]? We reply on the pitch."
