Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani needs tests for thigh injury - Emery

Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery has confirmed Edinson Cavani needs tests on a thigh muscle injury picked up in the French champions' 4-0 thrashing of Stade Rennes at Parc des Princes on Sunday.

The Uruguay international scored a spectacular lobbed effort to make it 2-0 after 43 minutes but was substituted shortly afterwards with a thigh strain. Cavani's teammates went on to finish the job with two more goals to close the gap on OGC Nice at the top of the Ligue 1 table to just three points.

However, Emery admitted his No. 9's injury requires tests to determine its severity, which makes him a doubt for Uruguay's two upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

"It is possible he has a muscle strain," the Spaniard told Canal+. "I do not know if it is a serious problem or not. I will wait for the doctors' analysis and they will inform me. He scored a great goal tonight."

Emery was pleased with his players' collective performance and was particularly happy with the way his team was "able to exploit the space better" after the opening goal. The Basque tactician was also satisfied with his substitutes, who "made a difference and proved the excellent squad mentality."

"Rennes began the match playing in a 4-4-2 shape, well-organised," Emery said in his postmatch press conference. "After a competitive start, we really played a great game.

In the second half, we continued to play with intensity and we managed to score four goals in total. The players are learning and you can see on the pitch."

PSG captain Thiago Silva echoed his coach's thoughts and praised the preparation put in place by the 45-year-old's staff for the Rennes clash.

The Brazilian defender was particularly happy with his team's "intensity" and "aggression," not to mention the fact "everyone is motivated."

"We prepared well for this game, with the coach and the staff this week," Silva said. "We tried to put in place what we expected to happen and it worked and we scored a lot of goals.

"It is normal that it takes a little time to adjust to a new playing style but I think we are there now and we can feel it on the pitch. The championship is still very open and we are right there. These are three very important points for the rest of the season."

Marco Verratti got himself on the score sheet against Rennes with a rare goal the day after his 24th birthday, and the Italy international hopes he and his teammates can continue in the same vein of form.

"It always gives me pleasure to score, even if it is not my main job," Verratti said. "It does not happen often, so when it does, I am very happy. Above all, I am happy for the way we played and the victory.

"We have to win games by playing this kind of football and this type of game is good for the confidence. We are continuing to improve with each outing and closing in on Nice in the standings."
