PSG's Champions League draw far from simple - Nasser Al Khelaifi

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al Khelaifi has played down talk that the French champions have been handed a comfortable draw in the Champions League.

PSG will be expecting tough matches against Group A second seeds Arsenal but would be favoured to beat Swiss champions Basel and Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets to secure a last-16 place.

Al Khelaifi appointed ex-Sevilla boss Unai Emery over the summer because PSG had failed to get past the quarterfinals of the competition during Laurent Blanc's three years in charge.

But despite the club's grand ambitions in the Champions League, Al Khelaifi said securing safe passage to the knockout stages would not necessarily be easy.

"You shouldn't say that it's a reasonable draw," L'Equipe quoted him as saying. "We have respect for everyone.

"Arsenal are a great team with a great manager. Basel we know. There's a nice atmosphere -- it's heated over there. And the fourth [Ludogorets] is good.

"The objective is to be first in the group and that's our goal."

PSG finished second to Real Madrid in their group last season before falling to Manchester City in the last eight.

Al Khelaifi said that this year the plan was to reach at least the semifinals.

"We're ready -- the players and the coach," he said. "We don't want to lose the chance to go as far as possible. But every year is different."

Al Khelaifi told the PSG website that he hoped the club's fans could play their part when they meet Arsenal at the Parc des Princes on Sept. 13.

"It will be very interesting to take on Arsenal in our first match," he said. "This match will take place at the Parc des Princes, where we're expecting very strong support from our fans.

"This support, I'm certain, will help us to make the difference throughout the whole competition."

PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who had been linked with a loan move to Arsenal last season, said it was "quite a good draw" and is also looking forward to the opening group match against the Gunners.

"They're a nice team, a great club, who have experience in Europe," he told the PSG website.

"I don't think that we're inferior to them and I like the idea of facing them."
