PSG striker Edinson Cavani excited by 'challenge' of central role

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani says he is excited about the challenge of playing in a central striking role this season.

Cavani, 29, made no secret of the fact that he was uncomfortable playing in a wide position in former PSG manager Laurent Blanc's 4-3-3 formation.

But now that both Blanc and the club's record goal-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic have left the French champions, Cavani has been promised a more prominent position under new boss Unai Emery.

"No it's a big challenge that I've been presented with to be part of the PSG attack in this central position," he told L'Equipe. "I'll try to be at my best and to respond to expectations, like I've tried to do in previous years.

"With the confidence of the coach and the club, I hope that everything will go the way we all wish it to."

The Uruguay international scored 25 goals in all competitions last season and he maintains that he is not feeling any extra pressure following Ibrahimovic's departure for Manchester United.

"Every footballer has his way of playing," Cavani said. "I have no pressure. What I'm presented with is a personal challenge in order to give the best of myself, to win titles, to score goals for my team and to help it when it needs it.

"It's the opposite of pressure. For me it's an honour to be one of PSG's attackers."

Meanwhile, Hatem Ben Arfa has said that PSG will place emphasis on the team dynamic without Ibrahimovic.

Former Nice attacker Ben Arfa, 29, moved to the French capital on a free transfer but the club's most high-profile summer signing does not see himself as a replacement for last season's top scorer.

"The star is the squad, the staff, the club," he told Le Parisien, when asked about replacing Ibrahimovic. "There's no individual star.

"You don't necessarily need a superstar to have a great team. You realise that when you watch Atletico [Madrid]."

Ben Arfa, who turned down interest from Barcelona and Sevilla to join PSG, thinks his new side is capable of winning the Champions League this season.

"What impresses me is the quality of the players in training," Ben Arfa said. "A squad like that is comparable to the French team. At training the quality is the same.

"You feel a high technical level. When a team has the ball [in training], it's more difficult to get it back than elsewhere.

"The coach has also impressed me with the work that we're carrying out. It's very well thought out tactically, technically, physically. Everything thing is done for a set purpose."
