Edinson Cavani's relegation to the PSG bench not likely to end soon

After beating AS Saint-Etienne 2-0 away from home last Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain are in Ligue 1 action again on Wednesday when FC Lorient visit Parc des Princes.

A win will keep Le Championnat's runaway leaders 24 points clear of second-placed AS Monaco and extend an already impressive 13-game winning run across all competitions.

Les Merlus have been something of a bogey team for the French champions in their own backyard over the years, with five victories from 13 capital meetings in the French top-flight. However, PSG have won the pair's last two encounters in Paris after failing to win any of the four before that.

Edinson Cavani enjoys playing against Sylvain Ripoll's men and the Uruguay international has three Ligue 1 goals from four appearances against the Breton outfit. However, there is a good chance that El Matador will have to make do with a place on the substitutes' bench yet again on Wednesday.

Since the beginning of 2016, Cavani has not been a member of Laurent Blanc's starting XI. What started as a surprise move to bench the South American has now turned into a prolonged dropping of the 28-year-old and it does not look like he will be getting his starting berth back anytime soon.

Cavani was involved in the build-up to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late second goal in the 2-0 win away at Saint-Etienne, but PSG's No. 9 did little else in his limited 17-minute cameo.

The Uruguayan being unable to score or to make a big impression in such a short space of time is not such a big problem.

The real issue is that when given a chance to lead the line and impress in three domestic cup matches since the turn of the year, the former SSC Napoli player has failed to take every single one of those opportunities.

Although Cavani is PSG's second-highest scorer in the league this season, he actually has not scored a Ligue 1 goal since the 5-1 home win over Olympique Lyonnais back in early December.

In fact, Cavani has gone six games without finding the back of the net across any competition -- unthinkable for such a once-prolific striker.

There is little doubt though that PSG look better going forward at present with a front three including an insatiable Ibrahimovic, a mesmerising Angel Di Maria and a jet-heeled Lucas Moura, than they did when hard-working Cavani was an undisputed member of the regular starting XI.

With the combination of the Swede, the Argentine and the Brazilian, there is more natural balance to the front three.

Di Maria and Lucas can bamboozle with their pace and trickery, while Ibrahimovic can concentrate on applying finishing touches to moves and occasionally linking up with his attacking cohorts to create chances for others.

PSG's football is more fluent with this trio up front and short of actually seizing one of his chances to impress when played through the middle -- most likely to come in the Coupe de France round of 16 clash with Lyon next week -- Cavani stands little chance of winning his place back.

With a trip to Marseille for Le Classique coming up this Sunday -- a potentially hazardous fixture, despite Marseille's disappointing form so far this season -- it is unlikely that Blanc will change his current attacking combination.

Therefore, Cavani will likely have to spend some more time on the bench and hope for longer than the last 20 minutes or so to impress.

Elsewhere in the capital outfit's squad, Blanc has been boosted by the return to fitness of most of the players who missed the trip to Saint-Etienne last weekend.

Captain Thiago Silva is back after a longer than expected injury lay-off, while David Luiz, Layvin Kurzawa, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Adrien Rabiot, Salvatore Sirigu and Hervin Ongenda are also available again after recovering from minor illnesses and knocks.

However, despite the numerous boosts across the group, the absence of Marco Verratti is a bit of a concern.

Considering that he only just made his return from a niggling injury in the 2-0 win away at Saint-Etienne last Sunday, PSG supporters will be hoping that his unavailability for Lorient is only precautionary.

With Chelsea in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League just around the corner, the worries over the prolonged absence of Javier Pastore and the frequent injuries suffered by Verratti are becoming more significant.
