Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria pleased after PSG topple Monaco

Edinson Cavani revelled in his match-winning performance at Monaco after steering Paris Saint-Germain clear at the top of Ligue 1.

The Uruguayan striker missed a series of first-half chances but was deadly accurate after the break, heading the opener in the 58th minute and adding a second after 74 minutes.

Ezequiel Lavezzi put the seal on a 3-0 win by driving home arguably the best goal of the night with six minutes remaining, collecting a defence-splitting long pass from substitute Angel Di Maria, who marked his debut with that assist.

PSG had won just three times in 39 previous trips to Monaco, so the comfort of their winning margin made it a particularly satisfying evening for the visitors.

After four rounds of games, they have four wins and are three points clear at the top.

Cavani said: "It was an important match for a lot of reasons. Notably because it's been several years since we won here.

"We dominated and we were superior in the game. We're very happy with this victory."

Di Maria, the club's £44million signing from Manchester United, enjoyed his first appearance for the Parisian club.

He said on PSG's website: "That was a very good match. I'm happy because we were hoping to win to pocket the three points and we did that. It was a beautiful debut, I enjoyed playing so much that I didn't feel any pressure."

Monaco head coach Leonardo Jardim said: "PSG played better than we did. I congratulate our opponents tonight.

"The first goal broke us. We've played eight matches in August, and that becomes tough physically.

"I have to give a lot of responsibility to young players. Inevitably it takes time."

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi approved of the performance by Laurent Blanc's team, saying: "I'm very happy with the result but also the quality of play we produced. It's important to develop attractive football. We've won our first four matches in the league and I'm very satisfied with that."
