Edinson Cavani must score more league goals for PSG - Laurent Blanc

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc has told Edinson Cavani that he needs to start showcasing his goalscoring ability more consistently for the club.

Cavani, 28, has scored six goals in seven Champions League outings this season, but found the back of the net only eight times in 24 Ligue 1 appearances for the French champions.

And speaking ahead of Wednesday's Coupe de France quarterfinal clash with Monaco, Blanc said that a change of attitude is required from the Uruguay international to be more prolific domestically.

"It's up to us, the staff, to convince the player to be more determined in the league -- because goals are important in the Champions League, in the cup or in the league," Blanc is quoted as saying by RMC. "And I think if you are a real goal scorer, you want to score regardless of the match, so you have to have that attitude.

"I have known some great goal scorers and whatever the match, they wanted to score. I would even say that they hadn't had a good game unless they had scored."

Blanc's criticism comes as L'Equipe reported on Wednesday that Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has made the signing of Cavani a condition to his own contract extension with the Spanish champions.

France's main sports daily claims that Simeone and Cavani spoke to each other by telephone recently, and that Atletico defender Diego Godin -- an international teammate of the PSG forward -- had initially been used to express the Spanish club's interest.

A major stumbling block to any such move would be Cavani's annual salary of 10 million euros after tax, while PSG would hope to recoup a large slice of the 64 million euros they paid Napoli for the player in 2013.
