Edinson Cavani: Respect between me, Zlatan Ibrahimovic at PSG

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani said he and teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic needed to "respect" each other for their club's benefit after the pair both found the net in Tuesday's Champions League win over Ajax.

Cavani, 27, opened the scoring and then claimed the game-clinching third in PSG's 3-1 win with his strikes coming either side of a sumptuous volley by Ibrahimovic to keep them top of Group F.

With the Sweden captain, 33, occupying the central role in coach Laurent Blanc's 4-3-3 formation, Cavani has been consigned to a wider role than that which saw him establish his formidable reputation at Palermo and Napoli.

The pair have often been reported to be at loggerheads, and Cavani suggested a successful professional, not personal, relationship was what the pair had.

"The most important thing is the respect two partners must have for each other. Respect is really the most important thing," he told reporters at the Parc des Princes, adding he expected Ibrahimovic to soon be back in peak shape after his recent heel injury.

"When a player has been injured for several weeks, he needs time to get his fitness and best form back," he said. "Ibra has to play matches. But he'll quickly get back to his best, I'm sure of that."

Sidelined from late September until early November, Ibrahimovic has slowly eased himself back into competition, though the manner in which he took his goal against the club where he first burst to European prominence suggested he is finding his feet.

The former AC Milan forward even had a hand in Cavani's opening goal, providing the pass that freed Ezequiel Lavezzi, who then set the Uruguayan up for a simple finish.

However, Ibrahimovic warned the troublesome heel injury, whose cause baffled PSG and Sweden national team medical staff, was still not fully healed.

"No, it's still not over with," he told reporters. "It's good that Edi and I scored. Edi's in great form, he is scoring lots of goals.

"I need to get back to form. I didn't do anything for two months because of my injury. I need to get matches under my belt to get back into the rhythm and get back to full fitness and form. That goal will, of course, give me confidence. It's good, it's very good."
