Thiago Silva takes blame for injury, admits Napoli friendly a 'mistake'

Thiago Silva has acknowledged he should never have played in the friendly in which he sustained the injury that has sidelined him for more than two months.

After playing Paris Saint-Germain's opening league game of the season having only just returned from his post-World Cup break, Silva, 30, suffered a hamstring injury early in a game against Napoli on Aug. 11 and has not played since.

PSG boss Laurent Blanc admitted he was at fault after being heavily criticised for playing Silva so soon after his return to full training, but told media the French champions had sent a fitness coach to Brazil to work with the Selecao captain before he came back to France.

However, Silva told Canal+ it was he, and not Blanc, who should be blamed for his absence.

He said: "It's not the coach's fault, because he asked me if I wanted to play or not, and I said, 'Yes, I'm ready to play'. But I think that for the game in Naples it was a mistake, because it was a friendly and it wasn't necessary. But I also wanted to play, because when I'm ready, I want to play every game. At that moment, I made a mistake."

He added: "It's an abnormal injury, a nine-week one. So it's always difficult to come back. I need to work a little physically and psychologically too, because my leg is fine now, but in the head, there is a little bit of confusion, a little bit of fear of playing."

Silva had been expected to return to competitive action in PSG's league encounter with Lens last Friday only to miss the match at the Stade de France because he is concerned about his father, who is seriously ill in Brazil, Le Parisien reported.

Silva could now play in PSG's Champions League group stage game with APOEL in Cyprus on Tuesday, though the French capital's daily newspaper suggested he may instead return to Brazil to visit his father.
