Panathinaikos appoint Andrea Stramaccioni as new manager

Andrea Stramaccioni has signed on as the new manager of Panathinaikos.

Panathinaikos have appointed Andrea Stramaccioni as their new coach, the Greek giants announced on Monday.

The 39-year-old Italian tactician has signed a one-and-a-half year contract and with the Athens-based outfit.

He replaces Yannis Anastasiou, who parted company with the club by mutual consent last Monday.

A statement from Panathinaikos read: "Panathinaikos FC is happy to announce the 1.5 year contract with our new coach Andrea Stramaccioni.

"The Italian coach was born on January 9, 1976 in Rome.

"We wish him good luck and a lot of success."

Stramaccioni, the former Inter Milan coach, had been out of a job since being dismissed by Serie A side Udinese in June.

Anastasiou had been in charge of Panathinaikos since May 2013 and had been named Greece's coach of the year in 2014 after leading the club to win the Greek Cup and help them finish runners-up to Olympiakos in the Super League.

However, Panathinaikos failed to reach the Champions League group stages this season and lie second in the domestic standings, eight points adrift of league leaders Olympiakos.

Stramaccioni's first game in charge will be the derby against Olympiakos on Nov. 21.
