Palmeiras sack Oswaldo de Oliveira after slow start to the season

SAO PAULO -- Palmeiras has announced that it has fired coach Oswaldo de Oliveira after the team won only one of its first six matches in the Brazilian league.

Tuesday's announcement came two days after the club lost 2-1 at Figueirense to drop to 15th in the 20-team standings, just outside the relegation zone.

In Oliveira's six months in charge, Palmeiras won 17 matches, drew seven and lost another seven. He led the club to the final of the Sao Paulo state championship earlier this year, when it lost to Santos on penalties.

Palmeiras president Paulo Nobre said the coaching change was made because he was not satisfied with the results achieved by Oliveira.

Palmeiras is the eighth team to make a coaching change in the first six rounds of this year's Brazilian league.
