Palmeiras' Jorge Valdivia given two-match suspension for stamping

Sao Paulo -- Brazil's sports tribunal has given Chile playmaker Jorge Valdivia a two-match suspension for stepping on an opponent in a Brazilian league match.

The Palmeiras player was facing a 12-match suspension for stepping on Flamengo midfielder Amaral following a battle over the ball in a Sept. 17 match.

Valdivia will miss Palmeiras' home match against Chapecoense on Thursday. The midfielder had already missed one match following the red card against Flamengo.

Palmeiras' lawyers said the player's defense that he did not intend to hurt his opponent. Valdivia had already apologized and said he regretted his actions.

The player was in court on Monday to offer his defense.

Palmeiras has the most national titles of any Brazilian club, but is currently in the relegation zone in this year's Brazilian league.
