Pirates have quality to be champions - on and off the pitch

Orlando Pirates have taken the unprecedented step of hiring a specialist striker coach, as they seek to find the firepower in front of goal to win a first Absa Premiership title in seven seasons.

The Soweto side unveiled Frenchman Stéphane Adam as the latest addition to an impressive technical team on Wednesday, after he arrived from French Ligue 1 side Lille.

Adam will work under head coach Micho Sredojevic and highly-rated assistant Rhulani Mokwena as the club searches for a new way to cure an ill in the South African game - a lack of accuracy in the opposition box.

The 49-year-old former striker played for Lille, Amiens and perhaps most notably Scottish side Heart of Midlothian.

The Buccaneers technical team also includes fellow Frenchman Franck Plaine, who is head of performance and spent four years as a physical trainer for the French Football Federation, and later performed the same role at Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Welshman Andrew Sparkes has joined from Swansea City as goalkeeper coach, while the club has also boosted its number of analysts to three with the addition of Darian Wilken from fellow Premiership side AmaZulu.

Pirates have so far signed 10 new players in this transfer window, but equally, if not more, important has been the added skills they now have in the technical team to assist Sredojevic.

It should make them tactically more astute, better prepared for matches and sharper on the pitch, which must make them arguably second favourites for the league title behind current champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The boost in personnel, on and off the pitch, is not just because of domestic commitments though - the club see themselves as contenders for the 2019 CAF Champions League played between November and May.

The added stress of these fixtures on an already tight schedule means Sredojevic needs all the help he can get, and the club have responded.

Pirates have also moved to fix their most troubled position in recent seasons, that of goalkeeper, with an excellent signing in former Kaizer Chiefs gloveman Brilliant Khuzwayo.

The 28-year-old proved himself a more than adequate deputy to Itumeleng Khune over the last six seasons at Naturena.

It would not be far-fetched to say he is arguably the second-best keeper in the country behind Khune, and now he will get the chance to prove it with regular game-time.

He will miss the first month or so of the season though after having screws removed from his ankle, with Wayne Sandilands likely to deputise in his absence.

The acquisition of Khuzwayo is perhaps the club's most important signing in recent times.

The 10 new arrivals in this transfer window have been brought in to add competition in all areas across the pitch, with most - bar left-back Paseka Mako - likely to be in and out of the side rather than regulars.

But they seem solid purchases, all with good experience in the top-flight, with perhaps the only question-mark remaining the attacking line.

Teenager Lyle Foster is off to French Ligue 1 side Monaco for an assessment and is likely to leave in January, once he has turned 18, if all goes well.

Zambian youngster Justin Shonga looks a real talent, while the addition of Zimbabwean playmaker Kuda Mahachi will add some guile.

But there is no obvious 'fox-in-the-box' type of player, with the experienced Thamsanqa Gabuza a handy target-man, but the likes of Thembinkosi Lorch, the fit-again Thabiso Kutumela and new arrival from Black Leopards, Meshack Maphangule, unlikely to break the 10-goal barrier.

Pirates have the squad and the technical expertise to improve on their second-place finish in the league last season, but their major stumbling block remains Sundowns.

What they showed in the second half of last season though was an ability to put in consistent performances and they will be very hard to beat.

Turning enough draws into wins will be key and it will be a surprise if they finish outside of the top two.
