Micho Sredojevic moved closer to a return to the helm of Orlando Pirates following the resignation of the club's Swedish coach Kjell Jonevret on Wednesday.

Jonevret has walked out on the Soweto giants after only five months in charge, the club have confirmed.

"I would like to thank the club for the opportunity. Unfortunately it didn't work out as planned. I wish the club and its supporters all the best for the future," the Swede said in a statement in the Orlando Pirates website.

His resignation has been accepted by club boss Irvin Khoza, who has already lined up a replacement in the Serb Sredojevic. The latter jetted into the country this week to hold talks with Pirates officials and is set to be announced in the coming days with the position of head coach now vacant.

Sredojevic quit the Uganda national team at the weekend, citing six months worth of unpaid salaries. He was previously coach of Pirates from June 2006 to January 2007.

Jonevret had hoped to turn around the fortunes of Pirates when he arrived in February, but found the deep-seated problems within the squad too difficult. He was in charge of the side for 19 matches, which included six wins (four in the Nedbank Cup), eight draws and five defeats.

The club finished 11th in the league, their worst position in 30 years, and were beaten 4-1 in the Final of the country's FA Cup by SuperSport United in what proved Jonevret's last game in charge.
