Orlando City midfielder Will Johnson arrested on battery charges

Orlando City midfielder Will Johnson was arrested on misdemeanor battery charges stemming from an alleged domestic abuse incident, MLS and the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The Canada international has been suspended indefinitely pending investigations into the matter by the league and the Orlando City Police Department.

An Orlando City statement on Wednesday read: "Orlando City SC midfielder Will Johnson was arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with an alleged domestic dispute.

"We are working closely with MLS and local authorities through this matter and fully support the League's decision to suspend the player pending further investigation.

"The Club will not provide further comment until the investigation into this alleged incident is complete."

MLS issued a similar statement on Wednesday.

It said: "Major League Soccer will remain in close communication with Orlando City SC, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Union during this investigation."

Johnson is in his first season with Orlando. He moved from Toronto FC in January. A former Blackburn Under-18 product, he has also played for Chicago Fire, Dutch side Heerenveen and Portland Timbers.

He has received 43 caps for Canada in his international career, scoring four goals.
