Paul Scholes will manage Oldham 'one day,' says club chairman

Oldham say they would "love" to appoint Paul Scholes their next manager but revealed the former Manchester United midfielder has not applied for the job.

Scholes is a lifelong Oldham fan and served on interim United manager Ryan Giggs' backroom staff at the end of last season and occasionally takes coaching sessions for Athletic.

But although Oldham chairman Simon Corney believes Scholes will manage the League One club one day, he does not expect it to be soon.

Corney told BBC Radio Manchester: "I'd love him on board but it's difficult. I think one day he will come and manage the club but it is all about timing for him.

"We speak on a regular basis and Paul occasionally comes down and does training sessions. He is a friend of the club."

Scholes, 40, retired as a player in 2013 after making 718 appearances for United and has also coached some of the youth teams at Old Trafford.

He is also a part owner of non-league Salford City with Giggs and his former United team-mates Nicky Butt, Gary and Phil Neville while he works as a television pundit.

Oldham are looking for a new manager after Lee Johnson left to join their League One rivals Barnsley.
