New York Yankees not making Notts County takeover bid - source

Notts County were founded in 1862.

The New York Yankees said on Monday that a report they are interested in taking over English League Two club Notts County was "not true," a club source told ESPN FC.

On Monday Sky Sports reported that talks were ongoing over a deal for County, the world's oldest professional football club, which was founded in 1862.

The report said the Major League Baseball club's parent company Yankee Global Enterprises was interested in making an investment in English football, with County's historic status an attraction.

But the source dismissed the report, pointing out that the Yankees "already have a relationship with Manchester City" and own part of New York City FC with them.

However, the source added it was possible that a person holding a minority stake in the Yankees could have had talks with County.

Notts chairman Ray Trew put the club up for sale earlier this year, but no deal has so far been forthcoming.
