Alex Neil disappointed with Norwich showing at Southampton

Norwich boss Alex Neil said his players did not deserve to get a result as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Southampton.

Neil had yet to lose an away game since taking charge of Norwich in January, but they were outclassed at St Mary's.

Their task was made much harder when Steven Whittaker was sent off in the first half after picking up two yellow cards, and Graziano Pelle opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Dusan Tadic netted twice in the second half.

"I thought we looked too comfortable and didn't move the ball well enough and didn't work hard enough," he said.

"The type of team we are, the way we play, we have got to be up for the battle and I don't think we won our individual battles as well as we normally do.

"I think it is more disappointing in the manner in which we lost the record rather than the record has gone. If my team had played well today and given everything they had got the record wouldn't have bothered me as much."

On Whittaker's dismissal, Neil told Norwich TV: "I thought the first one was a bit soft because Steven is trying to recover his position so the guy can't take a throw in and put it into the area that he's just left.

"For the second one he's tugged the lad back and I don't think there was any need to because the ball was running through to John Ruddy.

"The first one was a bit harsh but the second one was a silly decision, and it's ultimately cost us."
