NPFL: North West derby headlines matchday 21 fixtures

Kano Pillars clash with Enyimba LMC Media

Four-time champions Kano Pillars host Katsina United in a top-of-the-table North West derby at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

In the reverse fixture at the season's start, both teams shared a point in a four-goal thriller, as Junior Lokosa opened his scoring account.

Can Katsina avoid defeat a second time?

The third-placed side look to have their work cut out, as their away form remains uncertain, and Pillars should make home advantage count and, with Lobi Stars not in action, could cut their lead at the top of the table to two points.

Enugu Rangers' inconsistent home form faces further scrutiny this weekend as they host Akwa United.

Despite being unbeaten in five straight games - one win and four draws - the Flying Antelopes have struggled to break down teams at their backyard in recent matches.

If they manage to get their act together against an Akwa side who have often flattered to deceive on the road, the Flying Antelopes can keep up with the title-chasing field.

Champions Plateau United, who are without a win in three successive games, are home to poor travellers Nasarawa United in a North Central derby.

The Solid Miners are enduring a challenging campaign which leaves them three spots above the dropzone with 25 points.

That wretched record should see Plateau fully flex their muscles - home advantage and squad quality are their strongest points - and they ought to take maximum points.

Elsewhere, can Abubakar Bala mastermind Niger Tornadoes' second successive defeat in seven days following the end of a nine-game unbeaten streak?

The Kwara United coach was unceremoniously dismissed from his role at Tornadoes on the eve of the season, and could now be out to draw blood against the fifth-place Ikon Allah Boys in Minna.

Besides having a good working knowledge of Tornadoes, Bala has improved the fortunes of his struggling Kwara team, picking up 11 points in eight games, and will hope to get out of the bottom four with a big upset.

MFM FC must be wary of draw-specialists Abia Warriors, who come visiting Lagos on Sunday.

The Olukoya Boys haven't had the luxury of home games in recent fixtures, and should maximise the opportunity afforded for only a second home game in six outings to climb into the top half of the table.

In other fixtures, Rivers United face a herculean task as they travel to play relegation-threatened El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri. A home win improves the Warriors' survival chances, while a result on the road would keep Rivers in the top half.

Akure is the venue for the big relegation showdown between Sunshine Stars and Heartland.

The duo are 19th and 20th respectively, and are in dire need of a win to save their season, although current form does appear to favour the home team in the survival battle.
