Plateau United win, Enugu Rangers held again

Reigning Nigeria league champions Plateau United beat Kwara United 2-0 in a rescheduled match on Thursday in Jos, thus ending the Harmony Boys' six-game unbeaten streak which stretched back to the beginning of March.

Goals in each half from Tosin Omoyele and Raphael Ayagwa were enough to secure a win which drops Kwara back to the basement of the table with the midpoint of the season approaching.

Stephen Alfred was a thorn in Plateau's defence in the opening stages, shooting off target after gliding past Salomon Junior before seeing a goalbound effort into the top corner impressively saved by Dele Ajiboye.

That was as good as it got for the visitors, with Omoyele using his pace to beat Kwara United's defensive highline before slotting past goalkeeper Jonah Usman in the 20th minute.

Ayagwa who had done well to remain on the pitch following his second minute booking, made certain of the victory by converting from the spot with five minutes remaining after Omoyele had been felled by a clumsy Said Idriss foul.

The win moves Plateau into eighth on the log with 25 points after 15 matches, and extends their 100-percent home record this campaign.

Elsewhere, Enugu Rangers were involved in a third straight stalemate as they were held 0-0 at home by a resurgent MFM FC.

The visitors, who prior to this encounter had never picked a result in Enugu, were easily the better side in the first half, and Sikiru Olatunbosun had a 12th-minute strike ruled out for offside before crashing an effort against the upright with Femi Thomas beaten a minute before half-time.

Godwin Aguda's 58th-minute long-range shot was well saved by Abayomi Folarin in the Flying Antelopes' best goalscoring attempt of the game.

The outcome certainly does raise concerns for the coaching crew of Rangers as the team have failed to score for a fourth game running.

By contrast, MFM earned their first away point of the season at the seventh attempt.
