Mixed fortunes for Nigerian clubs in CAF competition

It was a mixed weekend for Nigeria's clubs in CAF competition, as while all four of the NPFL's representatives remain 'alive' in the continent, the West African nation has once again failed to produce a team in the Champions League group stage.

Here are four key talking points to emerge from Nigerian clubs' participation in the CAF CL and the Confederation Cup this weekend.

North Africans extend dominance over Nigerian foe: Plateau United and MFM FC lost out in the CAF Champions League to North African oppositions - Etoile du Sahel and MC Alger - as Nigerian teams' troubles against opponents from the region continue.

MFM FC were particularly outclassed, as they were thumped 6-0 in Algeria by an MC Alger side that thoroughly exposed their inexperience at this level.

Akwa United may have dumped out Al-Ittihad Tripoli on penalties, but elsewhere, the gulf between the performances of Nigerian teams and those from the continent's North was significant.

Olorunleke's nerves save Akwa United: The Promise Keepers created history twice on Sunday with their Confederation Cup victory over Al-Ittihad.

For the first time in the history of the competition, they won a home game and also achieved a club-best return by reaching the play-offs. This is firmly new ground for the Aiteo Cup holders.

A huge chunk of the credit should go to goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke, who held his nerves to save three of the Libyans' spot kicks in the penalty shootout following a 1-0 victory.

Impressively, the 22-year-old, who was guilty of conceding cheap goals in the home loss to Banjul Hawks of The Gambia in the Preliminary Round, redeemed himself to play a key role in United's progress.

Okonkwu shines, Ezenwa struggles for Enyimba: Chinonso Okonkwo was undoubtedly the standout Enyimba player against Energie of Benin Republic, as the People's Elephant progressed to the Confed Cup play-off round.

The attacking midfielder netted a brace and could have easily helped himself to a hat-trick in the 3-2 home win during a thoroughly excellent display.

While Okonkwo was clearly delighted without his outstanding contribution, the same couldn't be said for Ikechukwu Ezenwa, whose Enyimba debut could best be described as shaky.

The Nigeria international goalkeeper conceded two goals against the Beninoise team, including a direct free kick, and generally failed to replicate the commanding performances of Fatau Dauda.

It was a worrying performance by the stopper, who's expected to be Nigeria's Number One at the upcoming World Cup. On the basis of this showing, Gernot Rohr may be set for a few sleepless nights between now and the summer.

CAF Champions League blackout: Nigeria have failed to produce a participant in the group-stage of the CAF Champions League for a second year running.

What's even more concerning is the bigger consequence that the defeats of both Plateau United and MFM FC will have on the allocation of slots for Nigerian clubs in subsequent years.

Nigeria currently ranks last with 12 points on the CAF-competition five-year ranking list, and are currently holding onto the last place that will afford them two qualification spots.

With Nigeria producing just one team in the group stage since 2013, with the NPFL soon see their number of guaranteed spots in Africa's top competition dwindle?
