For three years the Nigeria Professional Football League goal record stood at 20 goals - the record set in 2011 by Jude Aneke, then of Kaduna United.

At the commencement of the 2013/14 league season, few could have imagined it been a record breaking year by a player who celebrated his strikes by doing the shoki dance moves - the reigning Nigerian dance at that time.

A certain Mfon Udoh, who had scored 15 goals the previous campaign at Akwa United, in his first season at Enyimba of Aba netted 23-goals, becoming the top scorer at the end of the season and earned the honours as the league player of the year.

That landmark feat ought to have heralded the beginning of greater things for the pacey forward. He had everything going for him, a prolific goal scoring record, which culminated in him scoring 38 goals in two successive league seasons. Truly an impressive return even by global standards.

Unfortunately, things went south for the Akwa Ibom bred player the following season, a title winning campaign at Enyimba, as he was mysteriously side-lined by an undisclosed ailment, thereby missing out on any potentially foreign deals.

Mfon has since bounced back in style, after rejecting last minute overtures from Sudanese giants, Al Merrikh at the end of 2016. Following the departure of long serving Enyimba captain Chinedu Udoji to Kano Pillars, he was named captain at the start of the current campaign.

He has thrived in his new role, propelling Enyimba into fourth on the table.

After 24 rounds of games, Mfon has struck 10 goals in the league, the third time he has hit double digits in his career as he impressively closes in on top scorer Stephen Odey.

The forward could be gunning for an unprecedented record of becoming only the first player to twice win the NPFL top scorer award in his career.

Mfon is certainly working his way up to greatness, following in the footsteps of legendary forward, Victor Ezeji.
