FIFA recognizes Nigerian federation elections

ABUJA, Nigeria -- FIFA has recognized this week's Nigeria Football Federation elections and says it has sent a letter congratulating new president Amaju Pinnick.

Pinnick was elected on Tuesday after months of turmoil in Nigerian football. The country -- the current African champion -- was banned temporarily from internationals by FIFA for government interference and threatened with a second suspension if it didn't organize credible elections. FIFA said on Thursday it has been notified of the results of the vote in the southern city of Warri.

The elections for a new NFF executive were still rocky, with one of the candidates for the presidency declared ineligible after he failed to turn up amid reports that officials were detained by state security forces.

Pinnick secured the required two-thirds majority after two rounds of voting.
