NPFL pacesetters face stern away tests in midweek

Plateau United LMC Media

Akwa United and Plateau United both face tough midweek away tests in Nnewi and Kano as the duo look to extend their early-season lead at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table.

Kano Pillars vs. Plateau United

Kano Pillars and Plateau United are set to clash in a top-of-the-table encounter at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Wednesday.

Home team Pillars are fifth on the table and have a 100-percent home record this season, while the champions are second and have looked impressive on the back of successive wins.

Junior Lokosa and Tosin Omoyele are the ones to watch, with the former having already struck four times this campaign.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah vs. Akwa United

League leaders Akwa United have to break the jinx of having never won away or scored against FC Ifeanyi Ubah if they are to maintain pole position.

The Promise Keepers have scored seven goals and won their last three games on the bounce, but will need to avoid complacency against an opposition 10th on the table.

Ifeanyi Ubah will be led by the impressive Godwin Obaje in attack as they gun for a third successive home win of the season.

Enyimba vs. Abia Warriors

Enyimba host Abia Warriors in the Abia Derby at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar in one of the more hotly anticipated matches of midweek.

The visitors were disappointing at the weekend as they were held at home by Sunshine Stars - dropping to eighth - and will need to improve significantly if they're to take a first away point of the season.

The People's Elephant have won the last two Abia Derbies at home, and should look to make it three in succession in their bid to improve their slow start which sees them 15th on the log.

Enugu Rangers vs. Rivers United

Enugu Rangers and Rivers United are separated by one point and five spots ahead of their midweek clash at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

The seven-time league champions were only minutes away from clinching an away point in Lafia on Monday, but succumbed to a last-minute winner to drop just a spot above the drop zone.

On a positive note, the Flying Antelopes have scored in their last four games, and against a Rivers United team who have failed to score away this season, they should be confident of earning a win which lifts them up the table.

Kwara United vs. Lobi Stars

Lobi Stars are gunning for a second away win of the season against bottom club Kwara United, and could climb up to top spot if results go their way.

It's been a good start to the campaign for the third-place Makurdi club, and they'll be keen to extend their fine run against strugglers Kwara United, a team who have already lost at home this season and have just a goal to show for their efforts after 450 minutes of league action.

Sunshine Stars vs. El-Kanemi Warriors

El-Kanemi Warriors' recent slump could worsen when they travel to face sixth-placed Sunshine Stars in Akure in midweek.

The visitors have earned just a point from their last two matches, and failed to score on the road this season, as they await their first away point of the campaign.

Victory for Sunshine Stars, a third at home this season, would guarantee top-four placement at the conclusion of matchday six.

MFM FC vs. Wikki Tourists

MFM FC have to show huge character against Wikki Tourists, only days after they were involved in a road accident.

It has being a slow start to the season for MFM, as they surprisingly find themselves 17th on the log, with their poor away form of particular concern.

Wikki have fared slightly better, sitting in fourth, but are interestingly just three points ahead of their hosts and would be pegged back with a defeat.

Niger Tornadoes vs. Heartland

Niger Tornadoes must address an alarming slump in form when they host winless Heartland in Lokoja.

Tornadoes are on a three-game losing streak, which has largely contributed to their underwhelming league position, and they must make home advantage count against Heartland, who are 18th on the log and remain winless.
