Nice hopeful FIFA will grant Hatem Ben Arfa clearance to play

Nice remain hopeful they will be able to play Hatem Ben Arfa this season despite the former Newcastle United man not receiving clearance to appear for his new club.

Ben Arfa, 27, signed an 18-month contract with the Ligue 1 outfit earlier this month after ending his Newcastle deal by mutual consent.

However, the French Football Federation (FFF) has yet to give Ben Arfa permission to play and asked FIFA on Monday to clarify whether the French international midfielder would be breaking rules that prevent a player featuring for three clubs in the same season.

Though Ben Arfa made no competitive appearances for Newcastle's first-team this season before being loaned to Hull City, he did appear for the north-east club's under-21 side in the Professional Development League against Reading in August.

According to RMC, in a letter to the FFF, the English FA stated the match was not officially recognised, and therefore Ben Arfa is free to play, and Nice feel the same way.

"The return to his country of the French international has not yet been sorted out from an administrative point of view due to the fact brought to light by our own federation with FIFA, despite an initial positive and unequivocal response from the English federation," a press release on the club's official website read.

"OGC Nice wishes to quickly resolve this issue and that the sporting logic prevails so that we can bring our new recruit into the squad for this Friday's trip to Bordeaux.

"In a period where the general feeling is one of disappointment at seeing a talent-drain, the club hopes to be able to count on the support of the national bodies to facilitate the return of an international to France."
