Newcastle United can be 'head of mouse' - boss Rafa Benitez

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has called on his side to show that they can be "the head of a mouse" as they prepare to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup.

Benitez used an old Spanish phrase to say the Magpies needed to show they could cope with the pressure of a challenge for promotion from the Championship.

They were beaten 2-0 by Wolves in the league on Saturday and now face them again as they try to make progress in the cup.

"Sometimes you prefer to be the tail of the lion or the head of the mouse," Benitez told a news conference. "When you are in the Premier League and you are at the bottom, you are the tail of the lion.

"Some people are happy being the tail of the lion but some prefer to be the head of the mouse so you are the top, and then you are strong enough, and you are there.

"What we want to do is show that we are strong enough, that we can manage games. And if we make mistakes we carry on, because there are a lot of games to play.

"Everyone -- staff, players and fans -- have to realise that it is a tough competition and we have to be consistent."

He urged fans not to get "over-excited" if results were good and added: "If it's bad, we should analyse and improve things quickly."
