Newcastle United fans launch new campaign against owner Mike Ashley

Newcastle United supporters have launched a website aimed at putting pressure on owner Mike Ashley to sell the club.

The Magpies slumped to a fifth consecutive derby defeat to rivals Sunderland at the weekend as another season fizzles out, leaving them in 13th place and nine points above the relegation zone.

Ashley, who has been in charge on Tyneside for eight years, has twice attempted to sell the club in that time.

Now fans who believe his exit is the only way in which Newcastle can move forward have set up Ashleyout.com and plan to organise a series of protests against his ownership in the remaining games of the season.

A statement on the website said banners and posters calling on the Buckinghamshire-born businessman to leave St James' Park would be distributed among supporters.

"Our club has been the subject of an organised tumble into mediocrity for the benefit of one person, and one person only, Michael James Wallace Ashley," the statement said.

"Today the club is an empty shell, a shadow of its grand former self. There is no ambition beyond staying in the Premier League to pick up 'our' share of the enormous TV revenues the league generates.

"We urge Mike Ashley to put Newcastle United up for sale as soon as possible, in earnest this time, and in an open and transparent manner.

"We will not lie down until the objective to see him removed as owner of our beloved club has been achieved."

Ashley, also involved with Scottish giants Rangers, said earlier this year that he would not sell Newcastle "for any price" until the end of next season at the earliest.
