Carver: Newcastle were second best (1:06)

Newcastle manager John Carver talked to the media after his side lost 3-0 to Everton after Fabricio Coloccini was sent off. (1:06)

Newcastle midfielder Siem de Jong will return to training on Thursday after recovering from a collapsed lung.

De Jong, 26, has managed only three appearances for the club since his £6 million summer arrival from Ajax, but could play again before the end of the season after being cleared to step up his comeback.

The Netherlands international wrote on Twitter on Wednesday: "The last X-ray was all good! So tomorrow I will start training for myself again. #NUFC #comebackstronger."

The news will boost Magpies head coach John Carver, whose squad has been hit by injuries and suspension in recent weeks.

De Jong's last appearance came in the 3-3 Premier League draw with Crystal Palace at St James' Park on Aug. 30.

Days later, he suffered a torn thigh muscle that sidelined him for more than four months, and had been on the verge of returning to the squad when he suffered a collapsed lung for the second time in his career last month.

The Dutchman underwent surgery and has now been given the all-clear to resume training with nine games of the season remaining.
