Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini red card appeal fails, will serve 3-game FA ban

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini will serve a three-game suspension after the FA rejected his appeal for wrongful dismissal on Tuesday.

Coloccini, 33, was shown a straight red card by referee Martin Atkinson for a high challenge on Aaron Lennon during the Magpies' 3-0 defeat at Everton on Sunday.

The Argentine defender failed to make contact with the Toffees winger, but the FA has upheld the ban meaning that Coloccini will miss games against Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle's Tyne-Wear derby trip to rivals Sunderland on April 5.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini will serve a three-game suspension following his sending-off at Everton on Sunday.

"The Argentine defender was given a straight red card for serious foul play following a challenge on Aaron Lennon in the second half at Goodison Park.

"The club submitted a claim for wrongful dismissal but an Independent Regulatory Commission rejected that claim on Tuesday.

"Therefore, Coloccini's standard punishment of a three-match suspension remains and will commence with immediate effect, meaning he will miss Premier League fixtures against Arsenal, Sunderland and Liverpool."
