Mike Williamson: Newcastle win over Hull shows support for John Carver

Mike Williamson spoke of his delight as Newcastle returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Hull at the KC Stadium.

John Carver celebrated his first win as head coach as the Magpies bounced back from last weekend's 2-1 home defeat to Southampton to move into the top half of the Premier League table thanks to goals from Remy Cabella, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran.

Following his side's first triumph of the year, Williamson decided to dedicate the win to Carver and told BT Sport 1: "You can see the lads are behind him and the performances -- we worked hard all afternoon and it's a tough place to come and we're delighted with the result.

"We had the quality to show through in the end to get the goals which we're delighted with."

The visitors took the lead five minutes before the break as Cabella was gifted a pass by the home defence just outside the area and fired the ball home with a powerful left-footed shot on the edge of the 18-yard box.

Hull had an equaliser ruled out for handball on the stroke of half-time after Ahmed Elmohamady blatantly punched Gaston Ramirez's free kick into the net from close range.

Newcastle doubled their lead five minutes after the break as Ameobi collected Jack Colback's pass and fired home a thunderbolt from 25 yards out.

Magpies substitute Gouffran, who had only been on the pitch six minutes, added a third with 12 minutes remaining as his shot from the edge of the box took a deflection giving the diving Allan McGregor no chance.

Williamson added of the win: "We've got the belief in ourselves as a group of players and we've got a fantastic squad, and now we know what our situation is until the end of the season and everyone is working together and we're hoping to have a good finish to the season."

Carver said the win was emotional after he took charge of Newcastle for the first time since being confirmed as the club's new full-time head coach this week.

He said: "It was very emotional towards the end when I went across to the fans because a long time ago I was standing there with them and to be on the pitch and to be in charge of this fantastic football club -- it was quite incredible.

"First of all I thought it was a good away performance. I didn't think there was too much between the two sides, but what stood out to me was the magnificent save by Tim Krul just before we scored.

"When you've got a goalkeeper of his quality, it always gives you a great chance. [Then] we go down the other end and get a great goal from Remy Cabella.

"I did say before the game that I wanted our front players -- who have got a bit of flair -- to excite and chip in with goals and we got that today."
