Red Bulls' Gideon Baah to spend entire season on injured list

The New York Red Bulls have placed defender Gideon Baah on the season-ending injury list, the team confirmed on Wednesday.

Baah broke his leg in July, ending his 2016 season, and the Red Bulls said they would not rush him back in 2017.

"After evaluating Gideon's progress, we have made the decision that we think is best," Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett said in a statement.

"This lets him focus on rehab with our medical staff. Our primary goal is making sure he has the time and resources to return to 100 percent health."

Baah's recovery time has been estimated at five months.

By placing him on the injured list, the Red Bulls will not be allowed to play him in the first team this year, though he could join up with their USL affiliate.

The Red Bulls can sign a player to replace him on their squad and use his international roster slot.

"There's potential that we have to add someone; we've been evaluating that one for a while," Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch told MSG.

"That's probably the one more piece that we need to supplement that position. So we'll see. Right now, Hamlett and our scouts are evaluating what might be next in that spot. Yeah, a lot of work is being put into that."
