New York City FC could soon have a new stadium on the South Bronx waterfront, according to a report in urban development website New York YIMBY.
The report said a 26,000-seat MLS stadium is part of a $700 million proposal called Harlem River Yards that was submitted to the city, with a tentative completion date of 2022.
The plan comes from a partnership between NYCFC, real estate developers Related, and investment companies Somerset Partners. YIMBY's report also included renderings from Rafael Vinoly Architects.
However, the Village Voice reported that Empire State Development has yet to officially open bids for the site, which is owned by the state Department of Transportation, so any plan is far from becoming a reality.
In a statement to ESPN, NYCFC declined to either confirm or deny their part in the proposal, saying only: "NYCFC is in active pursuit of a new home and we are looking at a number of possible locations."
NYCFC has played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx since joining MLS in the 2015 season. The Yankees co-own the MLS team with City Football Group, the parent company of Manchester City.
The stadium arrangement has often been criticised by fans, first for it's tight dimensions and then most notably last season when NYCFC shifted a game to Hartford, Connecticut, because the venue's primary tenants needed to reschedule a baseball game.
According to the report, the development plan on the 12.8-acre site just north of the Harlem River would also include a 25,000-square foot medical facility and 550 "affordable and workforce" apartments.
The proposal also calls for investment in the surrounding area, while Somerset is planning over a 1,000 "market-rate" residential units, plus retail, community and park space next door.
