New York City FC forward David Villa was named Best MLS Player at the ESPYS on Wednesday night after winning the league's MVP award last season. The 35-year-old scored 23 goals for NYCFC last season and already has 12 this year. He beat out a pair of goalkeepers in Philadelphia's Andre Blake and Seattle's Stefan Frei and well as FC Dallas' Matt Hedges and the Red Bulls' Bradley Wright-Phillips for the award. "I'm very happy and proud to receive this award on behalf of all of my teammates and coaches who help me every day to score goals and to win games for NYCFC," Villa told NYCFC's website. "Ever since I came to this club I've been living an amazing dream in this incredible city playing for this great club and its passionate fans. "Thank you to everyone who voted for me for this prestigious award -- it means so much to me." Other soccer players up for awards in multi-sport categories were not so fortunate at the awards show. U.S. midfielder Christian Pulisic lost Best Breakthrough Athlete to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, while Cristiano Ronaldo fell to track star Usain Bolt in the Best International Athlete category. Wake Forest's Ian Harkes, now with D.C. United, and West Virginia's Kadeisha Buchanan also failed to win Best College Athlete awards.
