Mix Diskerud and New York City FC looking to part ways - Patrick Vieira

New York City FC manager Patrick Vieira has said that the team are working with Mix Diskerud in order to find a suitable arrangement for the club and player to part ways.

Diskerud, 26, joined the team from Rosenborg BK in the Norwegian top flight ahead of the 2015 season and played regularly under then-manager Jason Kreis.

However, the U.S. national team player was relegated to the bench and eventually lost his spot in the squad under Kreis' replacement Vieira as the team went on to finish in second place in the Eastern Conference before losing to Toronto FC in the MLS Cup playoffs.

Vieira admitted the team was looking for players that were a better fit for his system, while adding that Diskerud had expressed his discontent over a lack of playing time.

"He is looking for playing time," Vieira told MLSSoccer.com. "We are having a discussion with him and try to find the best way to satisfy Mix and ourselves.

"What we really want is to find the right player who will make us improve as a team and then the right player has to be the right one, the good people."

Vieira held up recently crowned 2016 league MVP David Villa as the kind of "right" person the team would look to bring in, with NYCFC knowing it has an open Designated Player spot in 2017 after the departure of Frank Lampard following two seasons in the Bronx.

"I think David [Villa] is a perfect example. We want to bring players who can fill with what we are trying to do at this football club.

"If we find a young DP, it will be good. If he's not a young DP, it will be good as well. We just have to look at the options and take the best options that we have.

"We have to bring in some new players and that's something that will be really important for us, because we have to do better," the World Cup winner with France said.

"We have to bring players who can match our targets and we have different options on the table. You are not going to believe how many players would love to come to play for New York City FC, and we will have some difficult decisions to make."
