Robin van Persie, Memphis Depay dropped from Netherlands squad

Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay have been omitted from the Netherlands squad by Danny Blind for the upcoming friendlies against Wales and Germany.

The Oranje endured a miserable Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, failing to do enough to book their place at next summer's tournament in France, either via an automatic place or even securing a spot in a qualification playoff in November's international break.

Blind played down a row in training between Van Persie and Depay last month, but he has now opted to do without the pair for November's games.

Van Persie, 32, who scored an own goal in the 3-2 defeat to Czech Republic in October, said after his nation's setback that he has no plans to give up on his international career.

Dutch reports have claimed that Blind will not turn to the Fenerbache striker again, although the Netherlands boss appeared to suggest that he has not given up on him completely.

"I think he needs to improve, to get better at kickoff," Blind told a news conference. "Potentially, he is still the best striker."

The past few months have been a bumpy ride for Van Persie, who lost the Netherlands captaincy in August, with Blind preferring Wesley Sneijder for the role, while he was dropped from the starting lineup for the Oranje's final two Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Depay has also endured a frustrating time of late, having lost his place in the Manchester United team, with Louis van Gaal warning the attacker that he needs to start buying into his philosophy.

However, the United manager insisted the former PSV forward will bounce back from his latest disappointment.

"He is the greatest talent of his age," Van Gaal said. "He is only 21. That is an age where you cannot expect consistency. He is also in a phase of his career and he has to adapt to many things.

"I have expected this but I am also convinced he is coming back stronger than before. But we have to give him time."

Blind echoed Van Gaal's thoughts on Depay during his news conference on Monday.

"In football you must function in a team," he said. "He doesn't always do that."

Netherlands face a trip to Cardiff on Nov. 13, before travelling to Hanover four days later.
