Ex-Netherlands striker Dick Nanninga dies aged 66

AMSTERDAM -- Dick Nanninga, a former Netherlands striker who scored in the 1978 World Cup final, has died, Dutch club Roda JC said. He was 66.

Nanninga played only 15 times for the Dutch national team, but he played in the 3-1 loss to Argentina in 1978, one of three squads to make it to the World Cup final.

With the Netherlands trailing host Argentina 1-0 with eight minutes to play in Buenos Aires in the final, Nanninga met a cross with power to level the score. The Dutch lost in extra time.

The exact cause of death was not announced on Tuesday, but Nanninga had already spent months in a coma in 2012 when a lower leg had to be amputated.
