Patrick Kluivert to act as advisor for Curacao, hints at becoming coach

Patrick Kluivert has confirmed that he will act as an advisor to the Caribbean island of Curacao for their opening World Cup qualifiers, but has rejected an offer to coach the nation for now.

Reuters reports that Kluivert, 38, has signed a six-month deal with the island nation ahead of their two-legged preliminary round tie against Monserrat.

The former AC Milan and Barcelona striker, who lifted the Champions League with Ajax and scored 40 goals in 79 international appearances for Netherlands, still has ambitions of coaching in Europe but will train Dutch-based players and seek out new talent for Curacao.

"My ambition remains to become coach of a top club in Europe but until that time I will make myself available to help Curacao," he told reporters in Willemstad.

Kluivert -- whose mother is from Curacao and father originally from another former Dutch colony, Surinam -- said: "I'd like to give something back to the island where part of my roots lie. I've haven't come here for a regular holiday but to try and put Curacao football in a strong direction."

The former striker has recent coaching experience having been one of Louis van Gaal's assistants at the 2014 World Cup in which the Oranje finished third.

Kluivert hinted that should Curacao progress against Monserrat, he could be persuaded to take a permanent coaching role for June's qualifiers against Cuba, adding: "Maybe then I'll take over as coach. I'm open to the idea."

Curacao, who sit 160th in the FIFA rankings, will face Montserrat in the first leg at home on March 27 with the away leg due to be played on March 31.

Kluivert won three Eredivisie titles -- two with Ajax and one with PSV Eindhoven -- as well as the Spanish title with Barca.
