Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis: I won't visit Stadio San Paolo again

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis says he will not go to watch his side for as long as they are still playing at the Stadio San Paolo.

Business interests are the main motivation behind his decision to spend more time in the United States than in Naples, but he nevertheless says the matchday atmosphere at the San Paolo is anything but appealing, which is why he would prefer to build a 20,000-seater stadium of his own.

"It is not at all true that I have fallen out of love with the club -- the main reason is I want to move to America with my family to be best placed to carry forward my film producer work," he told reporters in Milan. "I've been dedicated to Italy and Napoli for 12 years now, but the time has come for me to look around.

"The second reason I will not set foot in the San Paolo again is because you can't see a thing in that stadium. It's far better watching the games on TV. I will return to the stadium only once I've built one of my own. It won't be the San Paolo, but a jewellery box for 20,000 members that will always be full."

De Laurentiis has been fighting with city administrators for years to be allowed to redevelop the San Paolo, threatening to take the club out of the city if they do not support him.

No progress appears to have been made with Napoli continuing to play in an ageing arena that requires special permits to allow the team to continue to play their Serie A and Champions League matches there.

"We've always had 6,000 season ticket holders, but it's not important that you have lots of season ticket holders -- what matters is filling the stadium for every game," added De Laurentiis, who believes a 20,000-capacity stadium would suffice to ensure a full house for every game.

Meanwhile, the Napoli president confirmed that he had met with Zlatan Ibrahimovic but said he was never going to be able to afford the forward, who joined Manchester United on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

"I like him a lot -- we had dinner in Los Angeles and he was illuminating and educated, nice, refined and you could talk football and many other things with him," De Laurentiis told Sky Sport Italia. "His family are beautiful and it's just a shame Napoli cannot afford somebody like him."

Ibrahimovic's agent Mino Raiola last week said that the Swede had expressed an interest in ending his career in Naples.
